Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. We do believe that Bell was the surname of Annie's birth parents. They were supposed to be related to some Bell's in Derry, NH. Her marriage certificate and death certificate list her adoptive parents. Her death cert. has 29 Jan 1866 and Haverhill, Mass for her birth. Her marriage cert. only has her age but does list Haverhill.
I did look in the book about Name Changes in Massachusetts. I could not find anything under either name. I am not in New England but I did find a copy of the book when I was visiting out of town in the library. I was in a hurry and it is possible that I missed something. We do not know if the adoption took place in New Hampshire or Massachusetts. I have written to the Archives in Boston and am waiting for a reply. I had written one time before but I did not have as much info then as now. I have also written to the New Hampshire (state level) and they were unable to find anything under either name. But I did not think about maybe her given birth name maybe different.
