A few quick ideas:
1. Do you know where your grandfather was living in 1920? If so, try finding him on the federal census from that year. Many states are indexed, so that might be the easiest way to find out more --- it should list what state he was born in, if nothing else. And (if you get really lucky.....) he may have other relatives living with him. The census is available at
many research libraries, at National Archives regional centers, and through Family History Centers (look in the phone book for your local Mormon [LDS] church).
2. Since he died in 1959, the chances that he is listed in the Social Security Death Index are very small (as it basically starts at 1962). However, he may still have filled out a Social Security form, if he was employed after 1935. If you have a death date & place and an approximate birth date, it may be worth writing to see.
3. See if your local library has a good introduction to genealogy, to help you figure out what the best way to go is for your particular needs. If you want more ideas, contact me off-list & I'll send a bibliography.
