Have you gotten Bertha's death certificate? You should be able to get it by
writing to the Salem city clerk. Also, if she married in MA, her marriage
certificate should have some information.

Have you checked the 1920 and 1930 census returns? If she is listed in
those, there will be more info there, possibly including when she
immigrated.

Was there an obituary in the Salem paper when she died? The Salem and Boston
Public libraries may have copies on microfilm. The Family History Library
may also have filmed it; try visiting www.familysearch.com or your local
Mormon (LDS) church and check out the library catalog.

Are there other relatives who were older than your father when Bertha died?
If so, talk to them to see if they know more, as knowing what town she came
(for example) from may be a big help in finding more information. [Note: my
father was 16 when his dad died; both his sisters, both younger then Dad,
remember more than Dad does, so you might want to talk to younger aunts &
uncles, as well.....]

The website www.cyndislist.com has lots more information on how to proceed
under 'how to' and 'beginners' as well as lots of links under US - MA.
