Subject: [MAESSEX] MOORE Families in Essex County, 1600's
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 07:50:13 -0500
Hello,
I have spent a few weeks finding out that the ..Francis MOORE.. family of
Cambridge, MA, is not well researched, as far as on-line information is
concerned. I have also spent this time trying to "collect" information on
the MOORE's who arrived in MA in the 1600's. I have posted this
information on the GenMA and MaBayColony Lists, so I won't repost it here.
But, what I'd like to do is mention the MOORE's in a few towns:
Lynn, MA
George MOORE (had daughter, Dorothy)
John MOORE there in 1641
John MOORE married 1673 to Susanna MARSHALL
Salem, MA
Caleb MOORE, there 1668
Francis MOORE married 1666 to Elizabeth WOODBURY
James MOORE, perhaps had brother, George or Richard MOORE
John MOORE had children, 1630's
Richard MOORE came on "Blessing" in 1635, to Salem, 1642.
Thomas MOORE, son of Thomas, there in 1636, had widow, Ann.
William MOORE, there 1690's, then to Ipswich, MA
Samuel MOORE, freeman 1632, perhaps came on "Lyon"
-had son, Samuel MOORE, 1630's (perhaps who had children 1670's).
Newbury, MA
Edmund MOORE, possibly son of Francis MOORE (Sr.) of Cambridge, possibly
died in Newbury in 1699.
Jonathan MOORE possibly a son of Edmund (married Constance LANGHORNE).
Younger Edmund MOORE - was called "Junior" but might not have been related -
married Sarah COOPER 1667.
Samuel MOORE (b1630) married 1653 Hannah PLUMMER and secondly married Mary
ILSLEY 1656. ..This Samuel reportedly died in Woodbridge, NJ, in 1688
(had 9 children).
Matthew MOORE, probably Samuel's brother. Matthew probably also moved to
Woodbridge, NJ, probably both in 1666.
Edmund and Sarah (MOORE) GREENLEAF, probably arrived 1634 aboard the "Mary
and John." (Sarah was reported as the sister of Francis MOORE (Sr.) of
Cambridge.) (Mrs. Sarah GREENLEAF was ..not.. the daughter of Francis.)
**I am finding that there is a definite connection of the Francis MOORE
extended family in 1600's Cambridge, MA, with the MOORE families in 1600's
Newbury, MA. But, I am also finding a small correlation between the MOORE
families in Cambridge to the MOORE families in 1600's Salem, MA. For
example, there was a (Deacon) Josiah?? MOORE who lived in a home on the
corner of Garden and Mason Sts. in "Harvard Square" in Cambridge just after
1800, which seems to have been the original home of Golden MOORE of 1600's
Cambridge. (Golden arrived ~1642 and moved to "Cambridge Farms" (now
Lexington) and then to Billerica
and I only know of 3 daughters.)
Another example is that brothers??, Dr. Francis MOORE and Richard MOORE,
arrived in "Harvard Square" ~1710. Did they move there from Salem, MA?
According to information I am finding or receiving, Francis MOORE (Sr.) was
born between 1582 and 1592 (~1588?) in Essex County, England.
His parents were Enoch and Catherine MOORE who were married in 1585. They
are reported to have had at least six children; they possibly had more,
except that Mrs. Enoch MOORE died shortly after childbirth in 1593. (So
far names are: Francis, Sarah, Samuel, Enoch, Jane, Judith.)
(Could there have been a John?)
I have not researched the family of Enoch MOORE yet, but did find out he was
son of Nicholas and Willamina MOORE of Essex? County, England.
Just as an FYI, I have just received new information from a "History of
Cambridge" which lists the following:
John MOORE arrived in 1636 (Age ??, was adult)
Enoch MOORE arrived in 1637 (Age ??, was adult)
Francis MOORE arrived in 1638 (Age ~52)
Golden MOORE arrived by 1642 (Age ~32)
.. My reason for this research is that my main research of 9 years is on
the KIDDER surname. The patriarch, James KIDDER (1626-1676) of Cambridge
and Billerica, MA, had married Anna MOORE, the daughter of Francis and
Catherine MOORE, who arrived in Cambridge, MA, in 1638.
James and Anna married in Cambridge ~1649 and had there first child there
~1650. They moved to Billerica ~1656 and had a total of 12 children.
And, my main purpose is to find out how many of the MOORE's in the 1600's MA
Bay Colony were related to Francis MOORE (Sr.) either as siblings or cousins
or children.
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
