My family was friends with Gus Means when I was growing up in Essex, and my
father worked for him in the early-mid 60's when he owned a lumber yard (now
the site of the Essex Home Center). Gus retired to Florida, and I heard he
died a few years ago. My mom still sees one of his daughters now and then.

In the 1970's he owned a herd of buffalo (that's right, buffalo) which were
pastured (is that the right word for buffalo?) on a patch of his land next
to Rt. 22 just beyond County Road in Essex. It was really quite something
to drive by and see these huge creatures grazing behind a 12' high chain
link fence. The curiosity factor caused more than a few traffic accidents.
Every now and then, the local kids would open a gate in the middle of the
night, and the police would spend a couple of hours chasing stray buffalo
back into the paddock. The buffalo are long gone, and the pasture is all
grown in with trees, but the fence is still there.

Does anyone remember if there was ever a pig farm in Essex? If there was
one, it must have been in the earlier half of the 20th century.
