Will of Samuel Chase of Newbury, file date 1 Aug 1743,
transcribed from microfilm of Essex County probate
copybooks at Massachusetts Archives, Volume 325, pages
278-280 (volume and pages as numbered by the
Archives). Other probate documents, including
inventories, exist but are not included here.
Punctuation, spelling, grammar, and capitalization are
as they appear on the microfilm. Brackets indicate

In the Name of God amen, This Eighteenth Day of
February, One Thousand seven hundred & forty One or
two, I Samuel Chase of Newbury in the County of Essex
and Province of the Massachusetts Bay In New England
Husbandman, being now in health & strength and of
perfect mind & memory, by Gods goodness to me, but
calling To mind the mortallity of my body and and
knowing that it is appointd [___] m[_]n Once to die,
Do make and and Ordain this my last will and
Testament, that is to say, Primarily and first of all,
I Recommend my soul Into the hands of God that gave it
and my Body to ye Earth To be Buried in Decent
Christian Burial at the discretion of my Exect.
Nothing Doubting but that at the General Resurection I
shall Receive the same again by the mighty power of
God And as Touching such worldly Estate, wherewith it
hath pleased God to Bless me with in this life, I Give
Devise & dispose of of the same In the Following
Order.
Imprs. I Give & bequeath unto Hannah my Dearly
Beloved wife the use & Improvement of all and singular
the Lands, Goods & Chattels that I shall In this my
last will, Give to my three sons (viz.) Saml.
Benjamin & John, until my son John shall Come to ye
age of seven years. and when my said son arrive at ye
age of seven years as aforesaid Then I Give to my said
wife One Third part of my housing & Lands and and
meadows that I have in Newbury During her Natural
life. I also give her One half of all household goods
and one third part of my stock of cattle to her and to
her Dispose forever.
Item I Give and Bequeath unto my son Amos Chase, and
unto his Heirs & assigns forever, all my Lands, Rights
& Titles, that I have or may claim, In ye Township
that was layd out unto the Naragansett Soldiers, which
is known by Name of Noone. I also give to this my
son, all my Buildings and Stock of cattle, household
goods, and husbandry Utensills In sd. Towne. I also
give him Iron work for a saw mill, which I have at
Bideford. I also give him ye Thirty two pound Note
that Is Due from him to me & my horse & my best suit
of apparrel.
Item I Give and Bequeath unto my son Samuel Chase and
unto his heirs & assigns forever, One third part of
all my Lands In Newbury and one third of my land in
Haverhill that I bought of John Swett, and One third
part of my salt marsh at the hundred acres in Newbury
(so called) and one halfe of my now Dwelling house and
One third part of my stock of cattle, that I shall not
Otherwise dispose of and one halfe of my husbandry
Utensils, and one of my Barns, and one third part of
my household goods that I have not Given to my wife,
and to come to possession of all that I have Given him
when he shall come to ye age of twenty and One years.
Item I Give and Bequeath unto my son Benjamin Chase,
and unto his heirs & assigns forever, One third of all
my Lands in Newbury, and one third of my Lands in
Haverhill that I Bought of John Swett, and one third
of my salt marsh at the hundred acres (so called) In
Newbury and one third part of my stock of cattle, that
I have not or shall not Otherwise Dispose of, and also
one third part of my Household goods, that are not
Otherwise Disposed of, and also all my carpenters
tools, and also thirty pounds In Bills of Creditt, to
be paid to him by my son John Chase and come to the
possession of his portion at twenty One years of age.
Item I Give and Bequeath unto my son John Chase, and
unto his heirs & assigns forever, One third Part of
all my Land in Newbury, and one third part of all my
Lands in Haverhill that I Bought of John Swett, and
one third of my marsh marsh at ye hundred acres, and
One third of my stock of cattle, that I have not
Otherwise Disposed of, and one halfe of my husbandry
Utensils, and and one third of my household goods,
that are not Otherwise disposed of, and one halfe of
my now Dwelling house, & one Barn and to come to ye
possession of what I have here given him at the age of
twenty One years, he Paying unto his Brother Benjamin
Chase, thirty pounds In Bills of Credit Old Tenor.
Item In case Either of my three sons Samuel Benjamin
or John should Die Before they come to the age of
Twenty & One years Leaving no Lawfull Issue, the
surviving shall have his portion, and In case all
should Decease, then Francis and Amos shall have ye
whole, paying One hundred pounds apeice to Each of my
Daughters In Bills of Creditt.
Item: I Give unto my Daughter Hannah Parker Forty
Pounds in Bills of Creditt to be paid to her by my
Execor. In six months after my Decease besides what I
have already Given her.
Item I Give and Bequeath unto my daughter Anne Chase
two hundred pounds In Bills of Creditt to be Paid to
her by me Execor. out of my Estate, when shee come to
the age of Eighteen years or marriage which shall
first happen.
(Item) I Give unto my Daughter Betty Chase Two hundred
pounds In Bills of Creditt to be Paid to her by me
Execor. out of my Estate, when shee come to ye age of
Eighteen years or marriage which shall first happen.
Item In case either of my two daughters Anne or Betty
should die, not having Received their portion, Then
the surviving sisters shall have her portion.
Item I Give and bequeath to my Grand son Samuel Chase
the Lott of my son Francis and unto his heirs &
assigns forever, Thirty acres of Land in Almsbury with
the Buildings on it, which Land I Bought of Thomas
Davis and to come to the possession, when he shall
come to ye age of Twenty & One years.
Item I Give and bequeath unto my son Francis Chase of
Almsbury (whome I make my sole Executor) and unto his
heirs & assigns forever, ye remaindr. of the farme
whereon he now dwell, of which I Gave him Part by Deed
of gift. I also give to this my son my Lands at
Kingstown that I bought of Thomas Webster, with the
sixth part of a saw mill, on or near said Land, and
all other Lands that I have at Kingstown, and also
give him my Islands at Sand Beach known by Name of
Chases Islands. I also give to him, all Other
Estate, of what Name or nature soever that I not
Otherwise disposed of, with ye Improvement of what I
have given to my Other sons, until they come to ye age
[___] fixed, all this I Give him on condition that he
Execute This my Last will & testament and pay all my
Just Debts and the Legacies left for him to pay: and
my funeral and other charges: and I Do constitute &
appoint my son Francis to be my sole Executor of this
my last will & Testament, and Do Give him all the
Debts due to me and I Do hereby Utterly Revoke &
Disallow all other wills and Execs.by me made,
Rattifying and confirming This & no Other to be my
last will & testament, In witness Whereof I have
hereunto sett my hand and sealye day and year aforesd.
Signed sealed, published & declared to be the Last
will & testamt. of Saml. Chase, in ye presence of
