Wendy-
As someone who is living in Boston right now I can
tell you that the traffic is not that bad- a little
time consuming getting in and out of the airport, but
around the general places you will be going it isn't
horrible. The T is a great solution and Boston is
really a great city to walk in so you can get around
that way too.
I would second the idea of checking out the freedom
trail, it is a great way to see many of the historic
sites. Also, we have Duck Tours which are tours that
go on land and in the water, they are a little pricey,
but take you around the city and bring down the
Charles River.
As far as food goes, there are lots of great pubs and
restaurants for lunch. If you are going to be in town
for dinner I would recommend the North End which is
Boston's Little Italy. There are many good resteraunts
(I recommend Monica's or Giacomo's) and during August
they have Feasts honoring different saints with
outdoor entertainment and festival type food.
I second all the suggestions about Genealogical
research, and if you are a shopper the area where the
NEGHS is, Newbury Street, has great shopping.
OK sorry this post is so long, but as you can see I
love my city!!!!
