Did the Bible say Salem Massachusetts or some form of abbreviation for
the state.? The person who wrote it just knew Salem and thought is was
Salem MA.
The information in Family bibles is often wrong especially is the
information was written after the death of the person. In addition to
Salem, Essex county MA, there is a New Salem, a Salem NH, also NY.
Look on USGS Mapping Information: Geographic Names Information System
(GNIS) <http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/> for all Salems and
look in the 1800 - 1820 census Census for James Hatch.
