I agree that this seems to me to be a good topic for discussion,
especially since John asked the question on behalf of an addition to
the Essex website.
I use both Rootsmagic and The Master Genealogist and have tried PAF
and Legacy in the past. They all have advantages and disadvantages
and each person has to decide whether a particular program fits their
needs. TMG does almost everything you could want, but as a result is
somewhat slow and complicated. Rootsmagic is easier to use and fast
and does everything that I want it to do. However, there are things
neither program does and I write my own programs (in Perl on linux)
to compensate.
There has been a lot of discussion about the latest version of Family
Tree Maker. It apparently has changed radically (see Dick Eastman's
newsletter at eogn.com, for example). I don't like change but others may.
