Subject: [MAFRANKL] UPTON family in Charlemont 1800's
Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 13:57:59 EST

I am searching for information about the UPTON family who left Reading,
Middlesex, MA and came to Charlemont, Franklin, MA, probably just after the
Revolutionary War.

Josiah (1735-1791), son of Ebenezer & Sarah UPTON of Reading. Josiah Upton
Sr is buried in the Old Cemetery, Charlemont. I think he fought in the Rev
War, but didn't live long enough to apply for a pension.
Josiah married Susanna EMERSON in Reading and they had several children there
1756-1772. They include:

Josiah UPTON b. 5 Jun 1759 Reading; d. 12 Sep 1838 Charlemont; m. 21 Mar 1782
to Sarah UNDERWOOD in Bedford, Middlesex, MA.
Does anyone have a listing of their children?

Joseph UPTON b. 6 Sep 1770 Reading; d. 11 Aug 1811 Charlemont; m. 26 Jan 1797
to Thirza FLINT in Reading.
Their children born in Charlemont include Thirzy b. 5 May 1798; Eliza
b. 17 Sep 1800; Joseph Flint b. 16 Aug 1802; Chester b. 16 Jun 1804; Eliza b.
10 Mar 1807; and perhaps Benjamin b. 25 Sep 1809 & Lucy b. 19 Mar 1811.
Can anyone confirm these last two children?
Is there a death date for the first Eliza?
Where is Joseph buried (1811) ?
What happened to the widow, Thirza, with her young family?

I am following the line of CHESTER UPTON (1804-1897) who married 3 Apr 1828
in Hawley to Miranda EDGERTON, dau of ? Asa EDGERTON & Lydia WASHBURN ?
Chester appears in the 1830 US census for Charlemont; 1840 & 1850 in Hawley.
At some point he moved his family to Williamsburg, Hampshire, MA, because
Chester & Miranda are buried at the Village Hill Cemetery, Lot 22 or 23 Old
Section, in Williamsburg.

This pretty much sums up what I have found in a couple of family group
sheets. I would appreciate any additional information, sources to prove or
disprove, etc.

Thanks,
Syl in Florida
