of Whatley, removed to Hawley in the winter of 1782. The snow was so deep
that when they reached Shirkshire in Conway, with their ox team, Mrs. Scott

house in Hawley. A Revolutionary soldier.

Removed to Hawley in 1782. He had done yeoman's service in the
Revolutionary Arm. He was a farmer, a man of great energy and integrity, he
was a prominent citizen in his adopted town of Hawley. For his services in
the Revolutionary War, he received a pension from the Government. Tradition
has it that he had his choice of 150 acres of land in either Hawley or Dalton
for these services, and he chose Hawley. However, deeds from settlers at
Hatfield for land in Hawley lead some to doubt the truth of this story.
