()
There were two other "Tobys," in the 1700s, in early Massachusetts who were
second cousins of Nat Wheeler Tobey.
One was Elnathan Toby, a military captain. Mt. Toby, north of the Holyoke
Range in Western Massachusetts, situated in southern Franklin County midway
between Montague and Sunderland, was named for Capt. Elnathan Toby, the first
white settler to reach the summit. He was an Indian fighter and had come to
the area to protect early settlers from attacks. He climbed the mountain to
scout out and survey the surrounding countryside, which could clearly be seen
for fifty miles in any direction.
Local Indians, who believed the mountain was inhabited by evil spirits,
fought early white settlers over control of the peak. Eventually they sold
the mountain to the whites for eighty fathoms of wampum.
Today, Mt. Toby is a summer resort area. Travelers hike, bike, and drive
the twelve miles up the old carriage road to the hotel and observation tower
at the top. In addition, the slopes are popular for nature studies by
students and faculty from nearby Amherst College and the University of
Massachusetts.
Both Elnathan Toby and his brother, Capt. Prince Toby, were descended from
Thomas Toby of Sandwich through Thomas' son Samuel and grandson Zaccheus.
Nat Wheeler descended from Thomas of Sandwich through Thomas' son Jonathan
and grandson Samuel.
Elnathan was first of eight sons sired by Zaccheus Tobey. He was born in
1727 in Dartmouth, Bristol Co., Ma. Prince was seventh, born also in
Dartmouth in 1741.
At age twenty-two, in 1749, Elnathan wed eighteen-year-old Deborah Taber,
daughter of John Taber, and niece of Peter Taber, owner of the Taber sawmill
in Conway. She had been born in 1731 in Dartmouth. They had five children.
Both died and were buried in Conway, he at age seventy-five in 1803, she at
age ninety in 1821.
Source - Don Adams:
Elnathan purchased land in Dartmouth in 1761 and sold it in 1777. He moved to
Conway, Hampshire Co., and purchased land there in 1778. Settlers had first
started coming into the Conway area ten years earlier.
He sold land in Conway for 80 pounds, Aug. 11, 1787 to Amaziah Tobey, a
tract of land adjoining one he had previously sold to Zaccheus Tobey; sold
another tract to Amaziah Oct 17, 1793.
Part of the land he owned there was on the beautiful Acushnet River, near
the Taber saw mill and dam.
He attended an organizational meeting of the local Baptist Church on Sept.
4, 1788, at which he voted to build the first church building in Conway. The
meeting was organized by the members of the Ashfield Baptist Church, founded
in 1761. He was named a deacon in the church.
Tax records of Conway list him from 1788 to around 1800.
From Conway Vital Records: Elnathan Tobey died June 11, 1803 at age
seventy-five. Grave site unknown.

It is unclear when Elnathan was at Mt. Toby. Relations between settlers
and Indians had been up and down since the Pilgrims first landed at Plymouth
Rock. For example, in 1654 the Puritans bought the Northampton area from
the Nonotuck Indians. Still, there were hard feelings that led to skirmishes
and attacks, rebellions, uprisings, and even wars. Such fighting was
interspersed with battles between American and French forces. In 1704,
there was a surprise attack by Indians on Deerfield, just a short distance
northeast of Conway. Deerfield was also a short distance west of Mt. Toby.
In 1755, Indians attacked the men at Rice's fort in Charlemont. And in 1757
a Guard of nine soldiers was sent to protect settlers in Weymouth.
Doubtless the pattern of Westward Migration was set in these early years.
Elnathan may have been sent to lead a small detachment of militia to the Mt.
Toby area after settlers had moved into the area and then been threatened by
Indians. His brother Prince might also have gone into the area about the
same time, since both were captains and both later lived in Conway.

My greatest concern in the whole thing are the linkages with Zacheus Tobey
to father Elnathan and Phebe Tobey (married to Samuel Allen) to father
Elnathan. For the last 100 years the family has had Zacheus connected to Rev.
Zacheus Tobey & Rhuamah Sampson and even submitted and gained entrance to
the Mayflower Society through the wife. I have 1 (nebulous) reason to connect
him to Rev. Zacheus and about 10 reasons why NOT and about 2-3 reasons to
connect him to Elnathan. It's one of those genealogical puzzles. The
strongest reason to connect him is a transcription of a letter (which I have
yet to obtain the original) from Amaziah to Zacheus addressing him as brother
and recounting to him the
death of his mother (including dates). I've decided to rest my case on this
letter--
