Ep: "This stone was erected by the First Parish in Hawley to the Memory of
the Rev. Jonathan Grout who departed this life June 6, 1835 in the 73 year of
his age and the 12 of his Ministry. He was the first Minister in Hawley.
Great unanimity among his people, prevailed during the ministry of this
devoted servant of Christ. He was buried in Doane Cemetery, Hawley,

Graduated from Harvard University in 1790. He was the first minister of
the Congregational Church of Hawley, being ordained to the ministry there
when the town was new, in 1793. He remained in that pastorate for 42 years,
being released by death.

They came to Hawley soon after their marriage and settled in the south part
of the town, where Mr. Joy built and ran a hotel known as "Joy's Tavern"
until his death. He was the south Hawley postmaster. He was married to
Persis WARNER on January 21, 1806.125

long time. Like many others, he was removed from office to gratify the
partisan spirit of President Cleveland.

Nelson and Henry Joy formerly kept a boarding house in
Washington, D.C. Among their patrons were Senator Wilson one year, Senator
Dawes for six years, and several Congressmen. Their brother-in-law, Hiram
King, was connected with them in the hotel business; he also owned a hotel at
Saratoga, N.Y. Nelson Joy was a messenger at the U.S. Capital for thirteen
years and for eleven years Henry Joy was connected with the Gov.
book-bindery. They later resided toghter at Shelburne Falls, Mass.
