as a man of affairs and as proprietor of the Buffalo Steam Forge; he did a

About 1840 he left the farm and began driving stage on the Ct.
valley line from Greenfield to Bratt.; removed to Rutland 1849 and was agent
for the Rutland & Burlington R. R.; about 1856 removed to Chicago and soon to
Galesburg, where he continued as one of the chief managers of the C. B. & Q.
R. R. until 1881; he was active in the affairs of the city; was director in
the 2nd National Bank and on the board of trustees of Knox College; to this
institution he left a large benefaction at his death.

Deacon; learned th trade of hatter in Springfield; removed to Deerfield,
1774; was fifer in the company of minute men and marched with them under
Capt. Locke on the Lexington alarm, carrying a gun as well as fife; he soon
came back, and in 1777 was in the Co. of Joseph Stebbins, which "assisted" at
the capture of Burrgoyne; he was fond of music and led the children choir for
many years, playing on a bass-viol of his own make; this is now in Memorial
Hall; he worked at this trade and lived on the lot now owned by his grandson,
Dea. Nath'l Hitchcock. He was married to Mercy HOYT on November 25, 1779 in
Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.98

training was at the town school and six winter terms at Deerfield Academy; he

Academy, 1813 - 19, pastor at Conway, Prof. of Chem. and Nat. History at

Reverend Edward Hitchcock (1793 - 1864) was born in Deerfield. He was a
minister of the Congregational Church in Conway from 1821 to 1825. He then
became a professor of chemistry and natural history at Amherst College.
Later he served as president the college. As a pioneer in the field of
geology he became one of the great men of science in his time. He published
many volumes and tracts on religious and scientific subjects and was noted
for his skill in handling the relationship of geology to the Scriptures.
