FIRST GENERATION
1. James (Jacques) DENOYON was born on February 12, 1668 in Trois Rivieres,
Montreal, Quebec, Canada.1 He died on May 12, 1745 in Boucherville, Quebec,
Canada.2 History of Deerfield, Volume II, by George Sheldon, Published by
E. A. Hall & Co., Greenfield, MA, 1896. p. 138
A Frenchman from Canada; was one of the "Three Frenchmen" noted by Mr.
Williams, in the Redeemed Captive, as living here at the destruction of the
town, Feb. 29, 1704; with his bride of three weeks, he was carried to Canada,
from whence they never returned; it is probable that James was from the
parish of Boucherville, where he established himself on his return. His wife
became a Romanist and was baptized May 28, 1708, O.S., by the name of Abigail
Margaret; she had for god-father De Vaudreuil, the governor of Canada, and
for god-mother, Margaret Bouat, wife of Antoine Pocudone of his generals.
The had other children beside Aaron (b. 1704). Francis B. Denio of Bangor,
writes me that he has heard of descendants of James now living in Canada;
Miss C. Alice Baker has discovered in Canada the ancestry of James Denio
(Deniuer, Denyo, Denayon).
He was married to Abigail Marguerite STEBBINS (daughter of John STEBBINS)
on February 3, 1704 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.3,4 History of
Deerfield, Volume II, by George Sheldon, Published by E. A. Hall & Co.,

On the return of peace, when Aaron was about 10 years old, a party of
Indians brought him to visit Deerfield; when the savages were ready to
return, the boy was missing; after considerable delay and vain search they
were obliged to go off without him; a mutual liking which had sprung up
between the lad and his grandfather Stebbins, explains the mysterious
disappearance. Aaron was brought up by Stebbins and inherited the greater
part of his estate. He learned the trade of shoemaker, but was for many
years a noted tavern keeper in Greenfield, on the lot now occupied by the Odd
Fellows' block; he served under Capt. Samuel Barnard, in the Father Rasle's
war; was a corp. at Fort Mass., 1748; ensign in Canada campaign 1756; in
1730 the General Court granted him 200 acres of land "for losses and
sufferings in the war;" in 1756 Greenfield voted him 4 pounds "for beating
the drum for meetins on Sabbath and other ocasions;" he was a decided
"character" in his day, and many funny stories are told of his
eccentricities.
