FIRST GENERATION
1. Jonathan ASHLEY was born on January 6, 1738/39 in Deerfield, Franklin,
Massachusetts.1,2 He died on May 30, 1787 in Shelburne, Franklin,
Massachusetts.3,4 Vanished Pioneer Homes and Families of Shelburne,

Historical Society, 1974. p. 70.
Jason Cady, innkeeper on the Albany Road, Shelburne's south end in 1780 and
1781, sold his farm October 21, 1782 to Jonathan Ashley who was an innkeeper
in 1784 and 1785. The following descripton of Jonathan Ashley, Junior (1739
- 1787) is taken from "The Revered Jonathan Ashley House," by Amelia F.
Miller.
"...it is not true always that persons are wrong because ye multitude
are against them...."worte Jonathan Ashley, Esquire to his younger
brother, Elihu, in 1769.
Eighteen years later these words could have well served as an epitaph for
Parson Ashley's oldest son, Jonathan Ashley, Junior, whose uncompromising
loyalty to the King of England cost him first his physical health, his mental
energies and his home, and ultimately his life. Graduated from Yale in 1758
at twenty. Studied Law. Married Tirza Field. Son William died in infancy.
Five daughters. Home threatened by a mob. elected by a Tory majority town
clerk and Treasurer 1781. Act passed forbidding persons to vote or hold town
office who had not taken the Oath of Allegiance. As a result of this
election he was taken to the Suffolk County jail. On March 27, 1781 he
petitioned for release from jail. At the time he had a wife and four
daughters, the oldest being only seven years of age. Release eventually
granted. Health never recovered. The year after his release he bought a farm
in Shelburne where he died on May 30, 1787, age forty eight.

settled here in the ministry Nov 8, 1732; he took an active and influential
part in the Jonathan Edwards controversy, being opposed to Edwards, who was

were published; Edwards described him at this period as "a young gentleman of
liberal education and notable abilities; a fluent speaker; a man of lax
principles in religion, falling in, in some essential things, with the
Armenians, and is very bold and open in it." Edwards was in a position to
judge Mr. Ashley, for he had felt the force of his blows, and had combated
his liberalizing views with all his power.
