Harvard College 1732; A.M. 1758; major; judge of court of common pleas
1761-3; a man of ablility and energy; a civil engineer; rep. 17 years; town
clerk 25 years; selectman 25 years; lived on his father's homestead and kept
a store on the corner, known in later years as the "Ware Store." This
building was removed in 1877 to make way for the Dickinson Academy; was
prominent and useful in military affairs; Capt. of the Snow Shoe men at the
opening of the Old French War; major and asst. commissary in the Last French
War, with a controlling influence on military movements on the frontier; for
4 or 5 years, 1748-53, he was in trade at Enfield, Ct. He was married to
Lydia DWIGHT on May 25, 1735.16
7. Lydia DWIGHT died on January 25, 1749 in Enfield, Hartford,
Connecticut.17 Elijah WILLIAMS and Lydia DWIGHT had the following children:
i. Sibyl WILLIAMS was born on March 4, 1736 in Deerfield, Franklin,

Graduated Harvard College, 1764; A.M. 1773, Dartmouth College;
settled at Keene 1771, as a lawyer; had been at Marlobo 1766-8, and at
Mendon; was a Tory and became a capt. in the British army; his estate was
confiscated and he settled in Nova Scotia, receiving, half-pay during his
life; he went back to Keene for the purpose of collection debts, as he had a
right to do under the conditions of the Treaty of Peace; a mob of Whigs fell
upon him and haled him before a justice of the peace, who recognized him to
appear at a court to be held in Charlestown in April; for fear he would a mob
seized and hurried him to Ashfield swamp, where preparations were made for
him to run the gauntlet between men armed with beech rods; this was
interrupted by law-abiding citizens; he escaped on horeseback in peril of his
life. he died while on a visit to Deerfield.

FOURTH GENERATION
12. John WILLIAMS was born on December 10, 1664 in Roxbury, Suffolk,
Massachusetts.28 He died on June 12, 1729 in Deerfield, Franklin,

"The Redeemed Captive;" grad. H.C. 1683; began preaching here June, 1686;
ordained minister Oct. 17, 1688; was interested in all the affairs of the
little plantation and soon became the guide, counselor and friend of all the
people; an account of his settlement, the history of his captivity and
redemption, and a notice of his character and works have been given in Volume
1. "The Redeemed Captive," through which he is best known, has gone through
at least eleven editions, and one rehash. He was married to Abigail ALLEN on
September 16, 1707.30
