M.D.; Practiced in Ill. and Ky., but made a permanent settlement in Athol;
was justice of the peace, and many years postmaster. He was married to
Marietta STEBBINS on December 29, 1813 in Deerfield, Franklin,
Massachusetts.5
3. Marietta STEBBINS was born on January 26, 1791 in Deerfield, Franklin,
Massachusetts.6 She died on December 4, 1820 in Athol, Worcester,

4. Dr. William Stoddard WILLIAMS was born on October 11, 1762 in Deerfield,
Franklin, Massachusetts.10 He died on January 8, 1829 in Deerfield,

W. C. 1825; studied medicine with Dr. Sargeant of Stockbridge; settled in
Deerfield, where he had an extensive practice and was a very prominent
citizen; lived on No. 111 of the Ministerial Lot, the Bull Corner; was town
clerk 17 years and constantly held places of honor and trust. He was married
to Mary HOYT on March 1, 1786.12
5. Mary HOYT was born on June 4, 1760 in Deerfield, Franklin,
Massachusetts.13 Dr. William Stoddard WILLIAMS and Mary HOYT had the

practice in Deerfield; lived on No. 14 south part; he was highly esteemed in
his profession and had a wide practice; was lecturer in Berkshire Med. Inst.;
in the college of Physicians and Surgeons at New York; in Dartmouth College,
and the Willoughby University, Ohio; was member of Ct. Med so. N.Y. Hist.
so., and corresponding member. Nat. Inst. of Washington; was author of
Medical Jurisprudence; Biography of Rev. John Williams; The Williams Family;
American Med. Biography; several addresses, papers, etc., in medical and
scientific journals; he removed to Laona Illinois 1850.

standing; was a large farmer and with his brother, Col. Joseph, built the

Doctor; came to Deerfield, 1739; lived on No. 9; became a prominent figure
as a man of affairs, as well as in his profession; was surgeon in the
abortive Canada expedition 1746, and for the line of forts; he left Fort.
Mass. only two days before its capture 1746; was surgeon in the regt. of his
brother Ephraim, at the battle of Lake George, Sept 8, 1755, and dressed the
wounds of Baron Dieskau, the captured commander of the French army; in the
campaign of 1756 he was lieut. col.; rep. 2 years; selectman 2, town clerk
17; judge of probate and justice of the court of common pleas, and had an
extensive professional practice. He was married to Esther WILLIAMS.48
9. Esther WILLIAMS was born in 1720.49 She died on September 24, 1800.50

Lawyer; M.A. (at W.C. 1795); studied law, and practiced in partnership with
the distinguished jurist and patriot, Judge Theodore Sedgwick, about 20
years, in the Courts of Berkshire. While pleading a case about 1803, the
presiding judge charged him with making a misstatement and ordered him to sit
down. The indignant lawyer replied: "I will not sit down, but I will leave
this bar forever." which he did, and came back to Deerfield; lived on No. 15.
He was the first reporter for the Supreme Court and published the first
volume; was rep., State senator, councilor and Presidential elector 1812. He
was always known as "Uncle Bob."

ix. Elijah WILLIAMS was born on January 30, 1767 in Deerfield,
Franklin, Massachusetts.64 He died on February 4, 1832 in Deerfield,

Better known as "Uncle Josh;" saddler; had a shop in Bratt. 1795; soon came
back and occupied for a few years the Ware Corner; was register of deeds for
Northern Hampshire five years and postmaster 1800; in 1801 he sold out to
Orlando Ware, removed his business and took up his residence on No. 15,
adding to his business that of pocketbook manufacturing.
x. Dr. Stephen West WILLIAMS was born on June 30, 1769 in Deerfield,
Franklin, Massachusetts. He died on January 12, 1790 in Stockbridge,

Innholder and "maker of wiggs and foretops;" lived in the Old Indian House,
which his father bought of Ebenezer Sheldon in 1744, which has never since
been out of the family; David was an active sol. in the French and Indian
wars. He was married to Silence KING on April 25, 1754.74,75,76
11. Silence KING was born in 1732.77 She died on September 18, 1803 in

David Hoyt was an innkeeper at Deerfield, Mass. The Massachusetts Tax
Valuation List of 1771 indicates Hoyt held various acreage and livestock
valued at an income of 25 pounds per year. He carried on his business as an
integral part of the town's activities. In 1767, he charged the town "2s,
10d for a quart of rhum and 2 mugs 1/2 of flip" when the old steeple of te
meetinghouse was taken down. When the new spire went up, he supplied 2 quarts
of rum and eight mugs of flip.
In 1777, David Hoyt served as a Corporal in Capt. Stebbins company. After
the revolution, he was a lieutenant and later a Captain in the local militia.
He was a member of the committee to plan the program commemorating the death
of Washington.
Politically active, David Hoyt served as moderator of Deerfield Town
meeting sixteen times between 1779 and 1802. He represented Deerfield in the
legislature, being re-elected a second time the year of his death. In 1802,
David wrote a letter encouraging people to vote because "the life of the
nation depends on the results of this election." He must have been
persuasive for the Deerfield vote was 214 to 0.
David Hoyt bought Lot 17 in Deerfield on June 4, 1787. A house was built
there in 1803. David Hoyt's estate was inventoried in 1804 and distributed
in 1805. the inventory included surveyor's equipment. On September 3, 1803,
Elizabeth Bull declined to administer the estate claiming it to be
inconvenient, but recommended Epaphrus Hoyt and William Bull be appointed to
that trust.

Maj. Gen. Mass. Militia, surveyor, student, antiquary, author,
and man of affairs; postmaster, justice of the peace, re. of deeds for
Franklin County 1811 - 14, high sheriff 1814 - 31, member of the cons
titutional convention 1820; was deeply interested in military science and was
offered by Washington an appointment in the U.S. army; he published in 1798 a
"Treaties on the Military Art," for the use of the army, which passed through
several editions; a more elaborate work on the movement of armies in the
field was published in 1816; he was a student of natural science and
contributed papers to Silliman's Journal and other publications; in 1813 he
published an elaborate paper on astronomy of 100 pages, as an introduction to
Dickinson's geography; he is best known, however, by his "Antiquarian
Researches;" he left an unpublished work on Burgoyne's campaign, and copious
notes on the French and Indian wars, of which he made an especial study,
which still exist in the MS., if , Happily, they have escaped the accidents
of time.

Col. of militia; an important man in his generation; was in the legislature
as rep. or senator or in the council every year save three from 1803 to his
death in 1833; in the constitutional con. 1820; was long county commissioner
and much employed in minor offices of trust and honor; he was born and lived
in the "Old Indian House," and published a Brief History of Deerfield, to
supply the demand for information from the swarms of curious visitors.
viii. Chariss HOYT was born on July 9, 1774 in Deerfield, Franklin,
Massachusetts.95 She died on October 14, 1775 in Deerfield, Franklin,
Massachusetts.96
