John Wells came from Greenfield in 1785 to the farm purchased for him by his father Samuel Wells from Obed Foote, which is situated at the north-east corner of the junction of the main east-west road and the north road leading to Sadawga and Readsboro. He served the town in many capacities and was commissioned Lieut. Colonel, of the Fifth Regiment, Second Brigade, Fourth Division of the Militia of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in 1797. He was also appointed Justice of the Peace, and we know of his handling the problems of the Rowe malefactors at the time of Shays' Insurrection in 1786-87.

Served in the Indian and Revolutionary wars; was a trader in Greenfield about 15 years, during which time he acquired land in Bernardston and other towns. About 1792-3, he took up his residence here, but soon returned to Greenfield. His farm was on South street, and is now owned by Mr. Harris. In the Greenfield paper, dated Dec. 13, 1802, appears this advertisement.

FOR SALE.

Noted Tavern and Farm adjoining, 5 miles from Greenfield Street on the Stage Road to Vermont, now occupied by John Pinks. 126 acres of land, three dwelling houses, two barns, three excellent wells. The Tavern house almost new. For terms of sale apply to Reul Willard, Greenfield.

Presumably the hoped for sale did not take place, for about 1805, Ruel Willard again took up his residence in town at his "farm and tavern stand," where he died May 24, 1806. He left home in the morning apparently well, a short time after, ws found dying about a half mile from his house. It was supposed that being taken suddenly ill, he must have fallen from his horse. His family continued to reside here until 1810 or 11, when they returned to Greenfield. Margaret WELLS and Ruel WILLARD had the following children:

A native of Greenfield, born in 1790, died in Springfield. He studied law with Elijah Alvord, was representative and senator, and for twenty years register of probate for Hampden county.

Son of Ruel Willard, was born in Greenfield in 1790, graduated at Dartmouth College, studied law with Elijah Alvord and Judge Newcomb, and was admitted to the Hampden bar in 1814. In 1815-16 he was deputy collector of internal revenue, and then editor of the Hampden Patriot, for some years. He was representative from Springfield in 1822, and two years later was in the Senate. In 1829 he became register of the probate court, ad served in that capacity to the acceptance of all for twenty years. He died April 11, 1864.
