Hello,
My name is Joan Hunter, I am a subscriber to this list, a certified
genealogist, and also the State Regent of Oregon.
I am not sure I fully understand what you mean when you say, "which DAR
did work in Benton County, Oregon, and" who are the *they* that "had come
through years ago and tried to place a marker on Hwy 20"?
Are you trying to find a marker that was placed in Benton County,
presumably by a DAR Chapter? If so, it would have been either a DAR Chapter or the
State Society. If you are attempting to find the marker, I can probably help
you. However, "locating someone at DAR to verify if anyone there had in fact
actually located the graves and where they could be found," is something a little
different.
Today, all DAR Chapters work through the NSDAR Historian General's
office in DC, when placing a marker, but that was not the case in the 1940s and
earlier. So a marker may have been placed, but no one at National would
necessarily have a record; however, we should have a record of the marker, the
inscription, and when it was placed in our state records.
Have you contacted Benton County Historical Society for further
information about the individuals? Unfortunately, I am leaving within minutes for DC
and will be gone until July 12th. If you still need help, I will see what I can
do when I get home.
Regards,
Joan Hunter
