He was a native of Hadley and came to Greenfield to learn the
blacksmith's trade of his brother-in-law, the late John J. Graves. In
1837, while with his brother, Dr. Cook in Canada, he was taken prisoner
charged with aiding the insurgents in their disturbances, but was
released when quiet was restored. He was selectman and assessor, and a
good citizen. By rigid economy he accumulated a handsome estate.
