There was a raid on Deerfield in 1696 when members of the Belding family
were taken away.
I cannot find a record that says they were returned to Deerfield. sourced
from the book "After the King Philips War", Pg 50,
reference from Pg 129 source.
There was a farmer named Henry Belding/Belden in the Montague, Deerfield,
MA area in 1800's. I don't know where his farm was. He was a poor farmer.
He had a wife named Mary and owned the property in 1830's and possibly
into the 40's. His wife gave birth to a boy in 1842 that was named Henry
Belding.
The boy was left on the doorstep of Zenus Cook on that year.
Zenus took the baby in. He had a daughter a little bit older as his only
child.
The boy was named Henry Belding Cook and kept as their child. He grew up
a hard working, diligent and prosperous member of Orange, MA. He, his
wife, daughter and son are buried near his Payne in-laws in the old
cemetery in Montague. He was my Great Great Grandfather
The Cook family paid a "large amount of money to Henry Belding for the boy
when notified. Soon after, the Belding
family moved to Sandisfield. That is where Henry Belding and his 2 sons
died. His wife ended up in service to another couple and lived with them.
I think the Belding family was part native american and were exposed to
rejection by the area people where they lived.
I think they were decendents of the Belding family members that were taken
from Deerfield.
How to I research this? Does anyone have any information or sources that
would help me?
