Roll Call

Deacon Benjamin Baker was born 27 June 1750, South Kingstown, R.I. His
first wife, Lois Babcock died in childbirth (not sure where), daughter of
Oliver Babcock.
He next married Hannah Tucker abt 1777, daughter of Jabez and Elizabeth
(Irish) Foster, widow of Caleb. She was born 21 Oct. 1755 in Charlestown,
R.I.

He purchased land in Barnardston, MA, and the land deed evidence is 1784,
signed by Oliver Babcock and his son Peleg.

His brother Elijah signed a deed for land 14 Dec 1785, newly arrived from
R.I., also signed by Oliver Babcock.

"History of Barnardston" by Lucy Cutler Kellogg, printed 1902, page 96,
states
"Some of those residing in Leyden prior to this time were John Connable and
his sons, who came in 1772, Oliver Babcock and David Page in 1779."

A school district was formed in 1789, and Benjamin Baker is among the school
committee, along with Joseph Babcock. In 1780, nine years before the
appearance of the Baptist society in Bernardston, a Baptist Church was
organized in Leyden. Members worshipped prior to that in private homes or
in Colrain.

Gravestone reads "Deacon Benjamin Baker, died 28 Sep. 1828, aged 78. "The
sweet remebrance of the just shall flourish when their forms are dust."
(West Leyden Cemetary)

Hannah Baker's gravestone reads "The liveliest virtues of the mind and body,
were in her combined. No pencil can her virtues paint. She lived a
Christian, died a saint".
