Hello everyone,
My brick wall is Charles Winchester who lived variously in Rowe and I
believe Charlemont although I have read that he owned lands in Warwick
until about 1814 after which he relocated to Vermont. His intentions
to marry Rene (Irena) Rice are recorded in Buckland in 1808, and they
were married in 1809, but I know not where. In 1810 he is found in the
Rowe census with four children indicating that either he or his wife
had children at home by a previous marriage. He died in 1824 in
Bennington Vt. after having applied for a Revolutionary War pension.
This is the Charles Winchester born in Brookline Mass in 1749. I
believe that it is this Charles who was the father of my ancestor
Elhanan Winchester by an earlier marriage. I have read various sources
which indicate a marriage between Charles Winchester and Lucy Upton
bpt. Mar. 13,1763 who reportedly died in Rome, Oeinda County, New York
per the Descendants of John Upton of North Reading, Mass. by John
Adams Vinton. If this is the same Charles, when did she leave him, and
were there any children?
Any help in determining who his earlier wife was would be greatly
appreciated. Seems clear to me that the answer lies somewhere in
Franklin County.
