Message Board Post:
Daniel,
I thank you for the information and I am already a subscriber to your King mailing list. We have shared info in the past, via e-mail.
One error in your message was that Amos King was also married to Emily Rulison. AMOS KING WAS ONLY MARRIED ONCE, to Elizabeth "Eliza" Bacon and it can be proven.
First, Amos was about 20 years old when he married Elizabeth Bacon, in 1811. She was about 17. They were married 19 Sept. 1811 by Rev. Alpheus Harding. They stayed married until their deaths in Easton Twp, Ionia, MI. He died 1863 and she died 1874.
Emily Rulison was listed in the Centennial History of the Town of Nunda as the wife of first husband, Torrey Smith, her second - Amos King. She is listed as the mother of Amos' first three children. This is incorrect.
1850 Torrey H. Smith age 27, b. NY, and his wife Emaline, age 25, b. NY, are living in Ossian, Allegany, NY (which borders Nunda, Livingston, NY) with their first child Charles, age 2 and and a young man, Arcemus Bisbee, age 28. This proves to me that Emaline (Emily Rulison) couldn't be the first wife of Amos King as Amos was living with his wife Elizabeth in Nunda at the very same time.
NOTE THE AGE OF EMALINE. SHE WAS B. ABT 1825. EMILY WOULD HAVE BEEN BORN AFTER MOST OF AMOS'S CHILDREN, INCLUDING THOSE SHE IS NAMED TO HAVE BIRTHED. In fact, she lived very close to the King family and may have played with the younger children as she was growing up. She was the daughter of John Rulison.
Torrey Smith died in 1857 and buried at Westview Cemetery, Livingston, NY. (FamilySearch.org lists his wife as Emaline E. Robison.) Emily appears to have married a Mr. Dean, next.
1860, Ossian, Livingston, NY, Emaline Smith, age 35, b. NY, is living with her son Charles A., age 13, b. NY and a daughter, Emma (or Emance) R. Smith, age 10, b. NY. Emaline is listed as the head of the family.
1870 I looked for Emma Smith (dau of Emaline), age 20, b. NY. I found an Emma Smith living with her mother Emaline Dean ,wife of Matthew/Nathan (looks like Nathan scrawled over Matthew) Dean, age 45, b. NY, living in 1870 ALLEGANY county, NY, in the town of WEST ALMOND. This is probably "our" Emma and Emaline.
Thank you for your help and interest! I'm always interested in new information. Right now I'm especially interested in finding out more about Elizabeth BACON and her family. If you learn more - pass it on!
Cynthia Stanley
