Subject: [MAHAMPSH-L] Lawrence Swamp, Dwight section, Belchertown
Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 16:43:25 -0400
Does anyone know anything about the Lawrence(s) for whom Lawrence swamp in
the Dwight section of Belchertown is named?
I'm interested in this because some of my ancestors lived in Belchertown in
the late 1700s to early 1800s. They included Goodells and Willsons and
lived in the Dwight area in Northern Belchertown. There is a Wilson Road
which parallels a Goodell Road in that area, and they are both next to
Lawrence Swamp.
One of my ancestors (a Willson) moved from Belchertown to Lee, Oneida Co.,
NY, where one of the children in that family married a Lawrence. A number
of people from Belchertown went to the Lee area--in fact there is a Belcher
Cemetery there.
I haven't been able to get back in the Lawrence family past Thomas E.
Lawrence, who was born ca. 1776 according to his gravestone and moved from
somewhere to Lee. It seems possible that these families had been neighbors
in Belchertown, but I can't find any hint of that other than the name of the
swamp.
