Napolean J. Grise
Northampton - Napolean J. Grise, 89, formerly of Florence Road, died Saturday
in the Mediplex Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Northampton, Dec. 3, 1904, he was the son of the late Joseph and
Evelyn (Rochleau) Grise.
A lifelong resident of Northampton, he attended local schools.
Mr. Grise had owned and operated the former Grise Shoe Shop on State Street
with his father. He worked there for 50 years, retiring in 1971.
He leaves two daughters, Beverly Tiptin of Brookville, Ohio, and Elaine
Yeskie of Northampton; two sons, Napolean Grise and Richard Grise, both
of Roswell, N.M.; two brothers, Alphage Grise of Northampton and Leo Grise
of Florida; two sisters, Blanche Steith of Northampton and Lillian Grise
of California; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There are no calling hours.
Mitchell Funeral Home of Easthampton is handling the arrangements.

PS - I knew Mr. Grise as he was the cobbler for all my shoes. To the despair
of my parents, I had the bad habit of wearing down the heels and after
replacing them several times, he was the one who suggested the metal "taps"
fitted to how I wore down the heels. After that, he got every pair of new
shoes before I had a chance to wear them and he replaced the "taps" when
they wore down. He could have made a small fortune just replacing the heels;
he didn't have to provide a solution to the problem.
His shop always had the most wonderful smell of leather. He was always
friendly and if you didn't mind waiting, he would do easy repairs while
you watched. I never found a cobbler to replace him after he retired. I
guess I was spoiled.
