I will fwd your two postings from the French and Indian War List to the
RUGGLES list. also to Maine, Mass, NS, Loyalist, with the hopes that some
of the more learned than I might be able to help. There are supposed to be
papers of Lord Amhurst that are in the NY archives in Albany along with those
of Sir Wm Johnson.

The historical documentation at Ticonderoga and Wm Henry (both reconstructed)
is scant in regards to Gen RUGGLES. Fact of the matter (very sad to say,
that what you see before you is more than they have)

PLEASE FWD THE ABOVE TWO POSTINGS TO WHO EVER OR WHICH EVER LIST TO WHICH YOU
SUBSCRIBE THAT MIGHT HAVE AN INTEREST IN THE SUBJECT OR PARTICIPANTS.

Let us see what surfaces.

Thank you,

Bill Perkins

I have an entry from Capt. John Knox "Siege of Quebec" for July 18, 1759
that states: "The command at Orleans have been reinforced by some of the
provincials who have lately arrived from New England". Could this have
been Ruggles Regiment? If not, does anyone know who they might have
been?

Subject: THE RUGGLES RHUBARB

Hi all - I have been researching the travels of the Ruggles regiment for many
months now trying to prove that they were at Quebec with Wolfe when it fell.
The reason for this is that my wife's ancestor (the genealogical references
claim ) fought with him at Ticonderoga (when Lord Howe was killed) and at
Quebec when it fell in September 1759. Alas, I have been spectacularly
unsuccessful (so far).

Here is what I've found:

1. Ruggles' 2nd battalion was at a camp before Carillon (Ticonderoga) on 26
July 1759. The reference is: "F&I War Notices Abstracted from Colonial
Newspapers"; Vol 3: January1, 1758-September 17, 1759 by Armand Lucier,
Heritage Books, Bowie, Md

2. An abstract from Vol 4 of the same series place Ruggles' regiment at Crown
Point on 16 October 1759.

3. In "Campaigns in North America" by Capt John Knox (Vol 3), both the 1st
and 2nd battalions of Ruggles' regiment were before Ticonderoga on 21 July
1759 - thereby, corroborating the above input. This was based on the journal
of Colonel William Amherst, the brother of the Commander-in-Chief of the
forces.

I have scoured Knox's volumes and I cannot find any reference to Ruggles'
regiment being at Quebec. In addition, Knox lists the regiments under Jeffrey
Amherst's command (this includes Ruggles) and at the time of the Quebec
siege, all of them were either at Ticonderoga or Crown Point. A further point
- the list of British officers killed or wounded at Quebec does not include
any from the regiments under Amherst's command.

The only reference that I can find to Ruggles' regiment being in Canada, is
in the campaign against Montreal in September 1760.

Finally, Eli Forbes preached his sermon to his congregation in Brookfield,
Massachusetts after the war was over. It is true that he was Ruggles'
regimental chaplain; however, nowhere does he state that he was physically
present at the fall of Quebec. I wish that it were true, but sadly it yet
remains to be proven.

Sincerely,

Hans Waagen
