Subject: [MAINE] CEMETERY VANDALISM

To all Listers:
This is being posted on the chance that there may be some trans-
planted Connecticut residents who read this List, or others who are
researching ancestors in CT in the Groton area. The Starr Burying
Ground on Lestertown Rd. in Groton was extensively vandalized earlier
this week. This is a very historic graveyard, being over 300yrs. old,
with 3,017 people buried there, dating back to the early 1700's. Many
headstones, tall memorials & obelisks were destroyed or badly damaged, with the amount of damage almost incalculable, because
much of the materials & workmanship are no longer available. The
superintendent of the cemetery has spent untold hours cataloging the
grave sites & their history on his computer. Any Navy personnel who
may have ever been stationed at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton
may be familiar with the cemetery as it is surrounded by Rt.12 & the
Navy housing area.
Unfortunately, these types of incidents are becoming commonplace
everywhere, & it is a sad commentary on our society that we have
amongst us such "warped" minds who will commit such acts.
Anyone having an interest in this matter can contact me if they wish,
& I can provide them with a POC for information.
