MANY have asked for the answer...so rather than answer individually,
I am posting the info here..
As it is obvious many on these Lists would benefit..
When New Brunswick was established in 1784 it was divided into 8 counties.
As the population grew, the original counties were divided and new counties set up.
The final total of 15 counties are subdivided into civil parishes similar to American townships.
Westmorland County is located in the south-eastern part of the province. To the north is Kent county
and to the south is Albert county. On the west is Kings and Queens counties. On the East is the province
of Nova Scotia.
Westmorland County was created in 1785.
The parish of Westmorland was created in 1786 and included most of the older Nova Scotian township of
Cumberland. The parishes of Sackville, Moncton,Hopewell, and Hillsborough were also created in 1786.
Dorchester and Salisbury parishes were set up in 1787. In 1805 the parish of Botsford was set off from
Sackville. Shediac parish was created in 1827, from parts of Sackville,Dorchester, and Westmorland Parishes.
In 1835, the boundaries of Moncton parish were expanded to include part of Dorchester. There was some
realignment of the parish boundaries in 1896.
In 1786, Westmorland County included what is now Albert County. In 1845,Albert County was created from
the Westmorland County parishes of Hopewell,Hillsborough, and Salisbury. Coverdale had been set off from
Hillsborough in 1828,and Harvey from Hopewell in 1838.
Well...... That's my History lesson for today..
And to think that I did not like History in high school.
My history teacher would be impressed..
