Hi Susan,
Wow, I'm surprised that Robert Tayor's work is not accepted. Am I
correct that all you need is evidence (proof) that John married Ruth Mayo?
If so, the place to be searching would be on the Cape. Eastham, Orleans,
Truro and Provincetown are the likely candidates.
Two children of John and Ruth Strout are shown in Provincetown records,
althought Ruth's maiden name is not given. This would have to be your John,
as there were no others known.
Possible leads: 1) The genealogy of Edward Small(ey); Atwood, I believe.
This book (set of three volumes) is a treasure of information, pay attention
to footnotes. It is available at NHHS in Concord, and perhaps at MHS in
Portland.
2) The Doane Family; (of Eastham). Available
in the Plymouth & Duxbury area-- Mayflower Library or Plymouth or Duxbury
library, sorry I've forgotten where I accessed it.
Your next two or three generations show a good deal of Strout/Strout
marriages, do any of these descend from Joseph ?
Cape Elizabeth records (b/m/d) can be found at the Maine State Archives,
I've found Strout data ~1770 there.
Let me know if I can be of further help.
