Subject: McDaniel in Maine

Dear List,

My ancestor from Maine is a Robert McDaniel, born August 24, 1756, at a place described in a Carbon County Pennsylvania History of 1888 as:

a small lumbering village near the Penobscot Falls, Maine.

I have checked with several folks from the Bangor area, all very helpful and kind I might add, and after many back and forths about this statement they informed me there was and is no Penobscot Falls as such. There are falls on the Penobscot, north of Bangor, but settlement at these locations did not occur till some 20 or so years later.

Upon further investigation, I have found McDaniels, Robert, John and Charles in the Gorham area in a 1763 census. A John and Robert occur in the York Co. court records, then John and Robert in a 1758 land purchase at Gorham bought from Enoch Freeman of Falmouth.

In the Pa. history it is stated that Roberts wife, Elizabeth Hicks was born in Pa. Upon further research this proved to be untrue, that his wife was really an Elizabeth Johnson, born in Pa. We believe Robert's mother may have been a Hicks. This name is prevalent in the areas mentioned, and in northern NH.

Robert came to Pennsylvania, as stated in the 1888 History text, "with Capt. Joseph Longstreth of Philadelphia to learn the trades of tanner and currier. We believe this was just before the revolution. The text also states that Robert was apprenticed to Longstreth by his father. All the information on the Pa. end checks out, Longstreth did own a tannery here.

Robert may have been accompanied by a Charles Haney, another prevalent name in early Maine.

If anyone can help me out with this search I would be most grateful. The name there is apparently interchangable with McDonald, McDaniel, MackDonnell etc. I have searched several records, Gorham Me., Early Maine etc. to no avail. If you can help or give other suggestions on where to look for Robert, please contact me. I have a listing of information and records I have checked in Maine I could send you before you waste time checking those I have already perused. Thank you for any help you may give.
