In the US, censuses were done in 1850 and 1880 and all other even years every ten years. If you post FULL details here, including locations and names of children, someone will be willing to do the lookup. If you know the county, you will probably get a faster response by posting on the board for that county.
There are many free census sites online, though Maine is not one of the common ones, except Aroostook County:

Otherwise you can find the films at most genealogy museums, national archives, and LDS Family History Centers. You can purchase a subscription to all census years from Ancestry.com (which I have, and use to look up things for people), and on CD from many sources, including the excellent indexed 1880 census put out by Family Search (the LDS site).
