Hi:

Sandra is right. For these years your best bet is Maine Historical Society
if the deaths occurred in Portland. There are indexes and records on
microfilm. However, I don't think they cover the last few listed. I think
births go up to 1892 and maybe marriages into the early 1900's, not sure
about the deaths. Portland City Hall vital record office is not at all
friendly. I definitely would not go there! Plus, they charge for each
search. If not a member of Maine Historical, not sure how much it would
cost to use the facilities but definitely not as much as that.

I don't believe date of death is found in the City Directories for these
years. Not sure when they started including that information.

The state archives in Augusta would also have the records for Portland
before 1892 (and some other towns) and all state birth, marriages and deaths
for the years 1892-1955 if a trip to Augusta is more convenient. Portland
Public Library is (slowly) getting these records. Right now they have some
early ones, plus the years 1908-1922

Chris
