Hello,

After several years of on-line searching, I have finally found my elusive,
possible ancestor, William WILKINS, mentioned in a book - with my very own
eyes !
:o)

He is mentioned in a footnote on Page 139 of the book, "The History of
Augusta, from the earliest settlement to the present time, the Plymouth
Company, and settlements on the Kennebec - together with sketches and
genealogical register." It was written by James W. NORTH in Augusta in
1870.

This page is in the chapter entitled, "From the incorporation of the town of
hallowell in 1771 to the Revolutionary War."

"1777 ....

... A State tax of L149 6s. 11d, was assessed upon the inhabitants
October 9th. Eight additional names appear on the rate list of this tax.
1 ....."

"1 Jonas Dutton, David Hatch, Stephen Norton,
Jonathan Philbrook, James Springer,
Benjamin White, Jr., Samuel White, William Wilkins.

For the people creating the books on the families and/or men living in
"Maine" prior to 1790, is the book reference sufficient "proof" for your
needs?

P.S. Twice this week, I have found out the hard way that we cannot
include a copy/paste of a photo, or a copy/paste of an on-line page from a
history book - which is considered a "photo" .. into the text of an e-mail
which is going to the RootsWeb Lists.
