Subject: ACKLEY - AKELEY Connections to PENLEY 1845 - Present
Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2006 16:45:50 -0400
The ACKLEY / AKELEY family in Maine has two known connections
to the PENLEY / PENLY family of Maine about 1845 - present. They are:
ACKLEY on Peaks Island, Cumberland Co, ME and
AKELEY in Presque Isle, Aroostook Co, ME.
Several distant cousins and I are doing all we can to try to contact
all living descendants or anyone with any data about any known
descendants in order to bring the descendants of Joseph 1 PENLY
as up-to-date as possible. Our base is the work of the late Rev
Robert Irving 6 PENLEY 1909 - 1996. If you or anyone in your family
had contact with him, please let me know.
I believe John ACKLEY d 1849 was 1m to Vesta ABBOTT and 2m 1843
Mary B (Polly) PENLEY 1816 - 1854, d/o Joseph 2 PENLEY and Lovina
MONK of S Paris, ME. John and Polly had Ambrose Virgin (AV) ACKLEY
1848 - 1941 who m Mary SKILLINGS. There were supposedly 2 other ch:
Humphrey and Rensalier b bef 1850, but we have not been able to find
information about them.
Polly AKLEY 34 is in the 1850 Census with her parents in Paris, Oxford
Co, ME. Ambrose AKLEY 2 was enumerated with them.
In 1860 Ambrose V ASLEY 12 was enumerated with Merrill SPURR 59
(Polly's 2nd husband), and Eunice L 42, in Otisfield, Cumberland Co, ME.

If you have any reason at all to think you may have connections
to the Maine PENLEY's, please contact me.
The following is a list of most of the surnames that the daus and
gdaus of Joseph 1 PENLY had as a result of their known marriages.
There may be others.
Daughters and granddaughters of progenitor
Joseph 1 PENLY 1755 Eng -1844 Maine are known
to have married into the:
ACKLEY / AKELEY, CROCKETT, DAKIN, DAVIS,
DINGLEY, DYER, GARCELON, HACKETT, HAINES,
HODGKIN, JORDAN, MARSHALL, MITCHELL,
PACKARD, RANDALL, VICKERY, WAGG,
WATERHOUSE and other families and lived in
Androscoggin, Aroostook, Cumberland, Franklin,
Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc, Somerset,
and York counties in Maine.
Some of these families, individual gch or G gch went to MA to
live and/or work beginning in the 1840's. From MA or directly
from Maine, some descendants are known to have moved on to
CA, CO, IL, IN, KS, OH, OR, MI, MN, ND, PA,WA. and WI
by 1900. One G gs stayed in MS after the Civil War, married, and
many of his descendants now live there. One gs went to Ontario
before 1850 and his descendants now live across Canada in ON,
SAS, AL, and BC. One G gdau and her husband were missionaries
in India and all but one of their ch were b there.
The success of this effort is absolutely dependent on the help of all of
our cousins. No matter what we do, there is no way we will be able to
find every cousin without the cooperation and collaboration of each and
every one of you.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you and am most grateful for
any additions, corrections, and help with data and in finding living
cousins.
Janice
