Janice... my sincere thanks to you for the transcription of information
about Andrew Reed, my 6th ggf. I have read this particular section before, but am
always amazed by the hardships they endured during these early years.

I've always wished I knew more about Andrew and Jean (Murray) Reed's life
before they came to America. A few years ago, I traveled to Northern Ireland
knowing that most of the records were destroyed by fire, but it was wonderful
seeing the towns they may have known.

Thank you for all the time you spend gathering information for us.

p.284 COLONEL ANDREW REED.
Colonel Andrew Reed came from Antrim County, Ireland, and settled at
Boothbay about 1731. He
was of English descent, although his family had lived in the north of
Ireland some years previous to his emigration to America. He was a man of marked
character, resolute in the performance of every duty, and a devoted and
strict Presbyterian.

During the raids of hostile Indians upon Boothbay, when Colonel Reed was an
old man, the
inhabitants at the Harbor, withdrew to the westward for safety. Colonel
Reed sent his
family to Boston, but in defiance of all persuasion, remained alone all
winter in the simple shelter of the log cabin. Contrary to expectation the
returning fugitives
found him alive and unharmed in the spring, and to their excited enquiries,
he calmly replied
"Why should I?" cried the old man, "I was not alone. I had my Bible and my
God."

His wife was Jane Murray, whom he married in Ireland, and whose nephew was
the Rev. John
Murray, first minister to the Presbyterian church at Boothbay, Maine.
Colonel Andrew and Jane
(Murray) Reed had sons:
1. John Reed
2. Henry Reed
3. William Reed
4. Andrew Reed, Jr.
5. Joseph Reed
6. David Reed
7. Paul Reed who married Marjory Beath.

He died 1763.
