An examination of Reading VR makes it certain that there were
contemporaneous Jonathan Parkers
JonathOn Parker married Mehetabel Bancroft, Jan 2 1699-1700
Mehetable Parker was born to Jonathan & Mehetable Jul 12 1703
Mehetabell, w. of Jonathan, d. Jul 18 1703
Mehetabel, d.of Jonathan & Mehetabel, d. Jul 25 1703
Jonathan Parker married Barbery Elsely Oct 15 1706
JonathOn Parker married Ann Flint Dec 26 1706
Between 1708 & 1727 9 children were born to "Jonathan & "Barbery"
Between 1709 & -say- 1727, 6 children were born to "Jonathan and Ann."
Of these six children,
one birth was identified as "daughter of Jonathan,Jr and Ann"
another birth was identified as "daughter of Lt Jonathan & Ann"
I am not aware of ANY other Jonathans in Reading at that time.
Certainly, the Vital Records do not reveal any.
Assuming there WERE only two, then we can assert that the
husband of Ann was
1)an army officer
2)younger than the husband of Barbery. (just younger, no relationship
is implied.
Next, to Reading deaths:
"Barbary, w. of Jonathan, Sep 15, 1747, in her 63d y."
"Jonathan, Capt., Apr 6 1746, in his 65th y. (North Reading
gravestone, no civil record)
"Jonathan 3d Jan 6 1748-9"
"Jonathan, Sergt. Sept 20 1749 civil record (in his 69th y., gravestone)".
And Wakefield* Church Records say:
Jona[than] Sep ----- 1749, age 69, Dropsy.
If we pull all this info to gether what we know is that
Jonathan husband of Ann Flint was a Lt (and then Capt) in the Army,
and that he was SLIGHTLY younger (by about a year or maybe two)
than Sergeant Jonathan.
I do not think we can conclude with absolute certainty -just from the
record- which of the two Jonathans married Mehitable Bancroft.
However, Lt/Capt Jonathan the younger was only 64 when he
died on Apr 6 1746. Therefore, he must have been born AFTER
Apr 6 1681. Since he was born AFTER Apr 6 1681, it is
EXTREMELY unlikely that he would have married as early as
Jan 2 1699-1700.
So the more reasonable inference is that Jonathan "the elder"
is the one who married Mehitable, and then married Barbary
Elsely. And that Jonathan,"the younger" married Ann Flint.
double whew!
*The Vital Records of Wakefield contain the ORIGINAL Reading cemetary
records. (To oversimplify:
Reading became the separate towns of Reading and South Reading.
Then South Reading became the town of Wakefield.
Meanwhile, Reading became the separate towns of Reading and North
Reading
