Hi List,
My late mother did a lot of RUSSELL research in the 1930s in CARLISLE, MA.
where my RUSSELL family once lived for five generations in the same house,
known as the RUSSELL place. It is pictured in a book on CARLISLE as is a
listing of my RUSSELL ancestors.
I had no idea that my mother did this research until my mother's brother's
wife sent it to me two Christmases ago. What a Christmas gift! That got me
going on genealogy research. My problem is this. My mother states at the
beginning of listing the generations and siblings of the RUSSELL line the
following:
RUSSELL
By Sally Sleeper Russell, Worcester, Ma. Circa 1931
DESCENDED FROM A NORMAN FRENCH FAMILY, FOUNDED AS EARLY AS 1016. THE ENGLISH
REPRESENTATIVE OF THIS FAMILY WAS JOHN, EARL OF BEDFORD, AND TO HIM WILLIAM
RUSSELL, THE FIRST AMERICAN ANCESTOR, TRACED HIS ANCESTRY. HE CAME FROM
ENGLAND AND SETTLED IN CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS ABOUT 1640.
Now my problem is this. There was no source cited for this ancestry in the
notes I have from my late mother. (I wish to find where WILLIAM RUSSELL
stated that he traced his ancestry back to JOHN, EARL OF BEDFORD) I wonder
where in the 1930s she would have found this information and the entire line
of our RUSSELLs through GEORGE WASHINGTON RUSSELL b. 1809 Carlisle, Ma.
complete with all children and some spouses? She also copied old papers of
MRS. GEORGE R. DUREN, CARLISLE, MA. 1931. I wonder if anyone on this list
would have any idea of where the papers of MRS. DUREN would be now. Did my
mother copy papers from her that stated this English ancestry for WILLIAM
RUSSELL?
Since beginning this genealogy project (the most fun project of my life) I
have been contacted by many other WILLIAM RUSSELL descendants (he had ten
children) and we all would love to learn where my mother found this
information.
I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions on this quandary?
Regards,
Jacqueline Sleeper Russell
