Susan, thanks again for trying to find Frank McMANUS and Clara KNAPP for me. I have censuses for all members of the KNAPP family EXCEPT for Clara in 1900. I've looked at all McMANUSes in Middlesex county in 1900--no luck finding Clara.

I've received the birth index information for Stephen Anthony McMANUS and have sent for his birth record. Perhaps there will be a clue.

The CA death certificate for Stephen's older brother, Frank J. McMANUS (apparently "Jr."), gives his mother's maiden name as MADDEN rather than KNAPP, but does list her as born in Pescadero, CA, which is correct for Clara KNAPP McManus. I wonder whether there is a Madden/McManus marriage in Massachusetts mid-1890s. I suppose she might have married a MADDEN before marrying Frank McMANUS.
