Hello,

Someone has just reminded me of the SMITH family in 1900 to 1920 Medford
area which was respondible for my grandparents meeting. I don't think
I've mentioned them in a few years, so I thought I would mention them now:

SMITH, WILLIAM J (1910 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 5-WD MEDFORD
Age: 56, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA
Series: T624 Roll: 602 Page: 170

The name, William SMITH, is a popular name, so I don't know which of the
many in 1900 are him, or in 1920, either.

Approx. 1908, his daughter, Harriett "Hattie" SMITH was a resident of "The
Temporary Home for Women and Children" in Boston. She was the best friend
of my grandmother there. But, they had become "of age," and William
invited both girls to come live in his home. That is when my grandmother
met "the boy next door."

(This is part of "my grandmother's story" which I've told many times on the
Lists.)

The reason I'm mentioning JONES is that SMITH and JONES are very popular
surnames, and, yet, we very rarely see queries about these names on the
Lists. Is that because they are too difficult to research?

Just an FYI .. in case it will help someone.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Another FYI: Don't forget that there is an important mistake in the
index of census records for 1900 in Middlesex County -- at the HeritageQuest
web site. There are many references to people living in Westford, and
most of them are not correct. Whoever did the transcribing must have had
the Town of Westford on his or her mind, because no matter where the person
lived, they wrote down Westford. Most of the time it involved people who
lived in Winchester or Woburn, etc.
