Subject: [PLY/MA] Oliver6 Cobb, Plymouth co., A Mayflower Line
Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 16:45:07 -0500
(In answer to a question I received) As far as I know, the parentage and ancestry of Henry Cobb has not been proven. We know he was from Kent co., England, but that's about it. Be careful of lineages you find on the net that claim descent back so far (1299).
As I was compiling sources to respond privately to Gary, I kept coming across more info, so thought I'd share it on the list in case anyone else was interested in this line. The more I dug, the more I found, including 2 Mayflower lines.
The following data contains the primary sources for the family of Oliver Cobb, from the Rochester VR:
Rev. Oliver Cobb, b. 18 Mar. 1770 or 1776, husband of Sarah and Hannah <VR
1:87>
Sarah Elizabeth Cobb, wf of Oliver, b. 30 Nov. 1773 <VR 1:87>
Hannah Cobb, wf of Oliver, b. 3 Jan. 1788 <VR 1:87>
Chil. of Rev. Oliver & Sally Cobb:
1. Nathaniel Cobb, b. 9 Mar. 1800, bpt. 1 June 1800 <VR 1:87>; Elizabeth S. Cobb, wf of Rev. Nathaniel, b. 4 June 1800 <VR 1:87>
2. Leander Cobb, b. 9 Mar 1800 <VR 1:87>
3. Leander Cobb, b. 5 Dec. 1801, bpt. 9 May 1802 <VR 1:87>, Rev., hus. of
Julia Ann and Selina F. <VR 1:87>
4. Sophia Matilda Cobb, b. 28 Oct. 1803, m. Nathan Briggs <VR 1:88>
5. Elizabeth Lathrop Cobb, b. 11 May 1810 <VR 1:87>
6. William Henry Cobb, b. 16 Mar 1812 <VR 1:88>
7. Sophronia Handy Cobb, b. 5 Sept 1813 <VR 1:88>
(Note that a child was rec. after Sophronia, no name or date known and the
records also mention the birth of another unknown child, no date known. <VR
1:88>)
Rev. Oliver Cobb's wife, Sarah/Sally died at Rochester, 12 June 1819, 46th
yr. <VR 2:366> Oliver remarried, int. at Rochester, 18 Sept. 1819, to
Hannah Burges of Wareham <VR 2:87>. The marriage probably took place at
Wareham.
Rev. Oliver & Hannah had the following children:
1. Sarah Everson Cobb, b. 19 Aug. 1820 <VR 1:87>
2. Edward Warren Cobb, b. 11 Apr. 1823 <VR 1:87>
3. Hannah Burgess Cobb, b. 24 May 1825, bpt. 10 July 1825 <VR 1:87>

Now to the Mayflower lines:
Seth Cobb, father of Oliver Cobb above, married Margaret5 Cooke (John4, Jacob3-2, Francis1) who has Mayflower descent back to Francis Cooke. There is an additional Mayflower line thru Jacob2 Cooke who married Damaris Hopkins, dau of Mayflower passenger, Stephen Hopkins.
