While it is simpler to trace a lineage thru a male surname, such as
Lincoln, (see below), it can be most rewarding, and also fruitful for
making connections, if one can trace the wives of a particular family
line. For instance, a trace of the Hanks family, (Nancy H. was the
mother of Abraham Lincoln) indicates she is a descendant of William the
Conqueror. William, thru his wife Maud (or Matilda) was also the common
ancestor of George Washington and of Winston Churchill.

I have found that in general, it was the wives of immigrant families who
had aristocratic forbears. It kind of stands to reason. Few male
aristocrats found it necessary to start new lives in a new world under
very rudimentary and stressful conditions. There were, of course,
exceptions to this generalization, including those who fled because of
religious persecution.
