To All Members of the Markham Mail List:
I grew up in an era where people that tried to dictate what was read and
written
was not tolerated in the America I love. So since this List has gotten to
the
point of telling it's members what they can and cannot write about the
research
of family genealogy, I have decided not to be a part of that conspiracy. In
fact this is not the American Way, that my ancestors fought and died for. I
have decided to leave this list until it can be straightened out if ever.
Tommy,
Having rules and guidelines for any list is common and usually they exist
for good reasons. In any group you join, be it on the Internet or elsewhere,
there are certain guidelines you agree to adhere to in order to be a part of
the group. These guidelines exist everywhere in all sorts of groups,
sometimes as loose guidelines, sometimes as actual ordinances or restrictions in a
more structured group like your neighborhood or community. Such guidelines
exist for the benefit of the group and can usually be changed if enough people
want to change them and will go to the trouble to do so. Perhaps finding the
appropriate person at Rootsweb and sending that person an e-mail would be a
start, and that approach is probably a better one than just leaving the list
until it somehow miraculously straightens itself out and is more to your
liking. I would suggest a REASONABLE e-mail, however, one in which you don't use
inflammatory words like censorship, attack people's motives, or accuse them of
a conspiracy to destroy America. I hardly think Rootsweb is trying to take
away your hard-won freedoms by having a few rules apply to postings. I
daresay a little perspective may be in order.
