David, I completely agree with you. I am up to 8600 names only because
I have been very lucky with haveing 3 very rare names that have societies
that have already done the research for me back to at least the early
1600's. However, I always take what is posted with a grain of salt. I too
have had people contact me and request corrections to be made or information
be taken off. I have no problem with that. But there are a few out there,
whether they are just starting off or are seasoned pro's that may take
someone else research as set in stone and not verify that the information
they found is even their line. We all need to be very careful of that.
These mistakes can be misleading to others when the copier posts the
information on the net. Imagine the snowball effect that this sort of
mistake could cause for someone else.
Now I am not saying lets all stop sharing. Sharing is the only way that
any of us will get ahead. Not only should we all be sharing our success
stories about our latest brick wall, but we should also be sharing our
failures and our numerous questions. We our a community, a family if you
will, that should be able to gather support from others regardless if we
have met before or not. My husband has not idea why I come home frustrated
and angry from the LDS centre because I found nothing. Then he gets even
more confused when I do a quick google search and I find 3 or 4 lines of
ancestors and someone else that I am related to and I am so over joyed that
I can't sit still. But I can grauntee you that at least 99% of this list
can understand and relate to those last lines. So please continue to share,
ask questions and support each other. Our list has come a long way in the
past year because of the hard work from our subscribers.
Finally, we all need to be on the look out for every one else in our
little community of genealoists. There are some people out there that
purposely stock our lists and other lists on the web waiting for someone to
slip up and post information about living people. Identity theft can be a
very devasting problem for the person that it happens to. I have had some
of my relatives email me asking for information about themselves, but
because I didn't recognize their email address or signature line I
essentally told them to get stuffed. Then I called the relative to let them
know that someone was stocking them, well we had a good laugh about it.
Anyways, post what you can, share what you have but be careful of what you
read.

Happy Hunting
and Merry Christmas
