Rosemary,
Sorry, I am a reluctant genealogist when it comes to having a website....I'm always afraid it's not quite right! It comes from lack of adequate documentation when I was a beginner years ago! However, most of the information I have on John Mathis is documented by researchers back in the Atlantic coast area, and I will try to resurrect it and pass it along. Some of it was actually based on information on Ford, and that gave leads to John.
Here is a quick bit from Delia/Delilah's records:
Petition of Delilah Matthews
State of North Carolina, Richmond County - Court of Pleas and Quarter Session, July Term 1823. The petition of Delilah Matthews humbly sheweth:
1. That her late husband John Matthews departed this life in the Month of February last intestate.
2. That he was seized and possessed at the time of his death of a tract of land lying and being in said County containing two hundred acres, or thereabouts, adjoining Peter H. Cole and Ford Matthews.
3. That at this Term of said Court letters of administration was granted to Ford Matthews.
4. That the said tract of land has descended to Cloe Matthews, Thomas Matthews, Smith Matthews, James Matthews and Sydy Matthews and Burwell Matthews as heirs at law of said John Matthews. The two first of the said heirs reside in parts unknown to your petitioner, and the others are infants under 21 years of age and that John McAlester has been appointed their guardian to defend this petition.
Your petitioner prays your Worships to order a jury to lay off and assign to her, her dower in said lands and your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray. I have a Hicks Cain that went to Dale Co., Alabama from Richmond Co., North Carolina in the 1820's or 30's. He may have had a daughter that married a John Mathis/Mathews in North Carolina. John died in feb 1823 and she later married David Mathis/Mathews. There were Strickland's there. One in particular was Lot Strickland. He signed papers for Ford Mathis. Any help appreciated. Nancy

He married Delia Cain, daughter of Hix Cain. Their children have been documented as James Burch (my line), Thomas, Smith, Burrell, Siddy, and Chloe. Siddy married a Coe, and had a son, Burrell Coe. John died in Richmond, Virginia in Feb 1823.A Mathis cousin sent your mail to the Matthews List. I'm not subscribed at the present time. I descend from Ford Mathis and Sarah Box. Since I have next to nothing on your John Matthews, Jr. I was happy to get the information. Do you have a web page where I could get some dates?
