Ralph
Matthews/Mathews/Mathew/Mathis are in most cases the same surname. What use to occur often is the individual who was writing the records used a phonic spelling, accents played a role in the spelling as well. I know of 2 brothers who immigrated from Italy about 50 yrs. ago arriving a month apart & both spoke limited English. The 1st brother said his surname clearly, when the younger brother arrived later he was extremely nervous and said La and that was added to his surname, this was done at the port of entry. I never asked why it was never corrected or how it occured since he did have indefication papers when he arrived.
Doing research on my lines, my dad related how my grandfather and ggrandfather both had affairs with married ladies resulting in them having children, these things happened even back then & I honestly don't know how they knew. Sometimes the ladies took the men to court for paternity, they would be listed as Bastard court records in the areas your family settled, I've seen some and sometimes the man married the lady and the charges where dropped, sometimes the case was thrown out & etc. The area these families settled in may also be close to where your family settled and there could have been some sort of adoption, there wasn't formal adoptions in the courts as are done now. A father could have died and a maternal uncle stepped in and raised the child as his own. There are so many reasons you have a match. I know my statements are about as clear as mud. My Matthews settled in Sevier Co., TN after migrating from Greene Co., TN that's about as far as I have been able to trace.

> Hello to the Matthews list.
> My name is Ralph Martin and I belong to several other lists but because of my DNA I must try to find my roots with the Matthews sir name. One my 67 marker matches I match up with Gregory Wayne Matthews and Samuel Arthur Matthews. On my 37 marker matches I match up with Dr. Ralph Wayne Matthews and Horace Greeley Matthews. Also I match with 2 Mathis sir names. 1 at 67 and 1 at 37. And 1 Looney sir name at 67 markers
