The term 'mill girls' usually refers to the young women who went to work in
the cotton mills of Lowell, Mass. Lowell, being the best known of the mill
towns, however, there were others also. One of the very best sources is a
book by Harriet H. Robinson, entitled, Loom & Spindle, of Life Among the
Early Mill Girls. The author was a mill girl at Lowell from 1835 until she
married in 1848.
Any histories of the town of Lowell would most likely contain information
about the mills. I would also check a town history of Gardner. Good
searching. Joan Hunter
