Subject: [MAWORCES] 1840 Map of Worcester County
Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 22:02:29 -0000
Druning the lunch hour today, I scanned an 1840 map of Worcester County.
The image was taken from the Holden Mass Town Book published in 1841. I
cannot find any copyright information and make the assumption that the book
in in the public domain, as is the map.
I have chosen a JPEG format which may lose some resolution over time,
depending on how many times it is transmitted, but the objective is to be
able to use the map as a research tool, rather than to have it as a
historical artifact.
I am realtively sure that the List Server will not allow attachments, since
that is a quick way to spread computer viruses. If you want a copy of the
map, send me an e-mail directly. DO NOT REPLY TO THE SERVER. Use the
address <> I will reply with an attachment that
is a JPEG image that is 677Kilobytes. I have two larger files, but unless
you have a T-1 data "pipe" and a computer that will run very large grahpics
files, I recommend that you stay with the 677K file.
One of the things I noticed on the image is that there is no significant
highway network (no cars at that time); however, the railroads were covering
a large portion of the countryside. I had often wondered why the ancestors
ended up in the places that they did. It became very apprent once I looked
at the rail links around the county.
I hope that this is useful to you as it has been to me.
