Hi All,
In Massachusetts the city/town directories list everyone over 20 years old.
The earlier ones of course did not list wives. Even adult children were
listed as boarders and their occupation is listed. A 22 year old women would
be listed along with her occupation. A check of the census should get the
younger members of the family.
I have always interpreted the house as the owner or the "head of household"
who is responsible for paying the rent.
